Representatives from Rob Ferreira High School attended the opening of the new skills hub at Ngodwana recently.

This is the second skills centre the company opened and it will provide local unemployed youth with vocational skills that can enable them to create small businesses and increase their chances of finding jobs.

Through equipment available at the centre, it also aims to integrate with schools in the area in terms of career guidance and practical exposure to the engineering and operations environment.

Sappi Ngodwana Mill General Manager Naresh Naidoo said Sappi has established the centre to contribute to much-needed skills development and social upliftment of the communities surrounding the mill.

Sappi Ngodwana Mill general manager Naresh Naidoo officially opens the skills centre.

“South Africa needs more youth with skills so that they can create their own employment opportunities – skills such as basic plumbing, electricity and building will help them make a living,” said Naidoo. “We know that this will not solve all of the unemployment issues and social challenges in Mpumalanga or the country, but it is our contribution.”

The skills centre consist of lecture rooms, engineering workshops, an operational simulation plant and a community skills centre kitchen and workshop.

It focuses on providing artisan or apprentice development, operations development, leadership development, compliance skills development and community skills development.
