Pupils in rural area are now recycling experts

Learners from AA Khumalo Primary School in the Embonisweni area near KaBokweni learned more about recycling from Mrs SA semi-finalist, Tammy Taylor recently.

The event was organised by Morné Green of I-Waste, a recycling company in the Plaston area.

Taylor is the only semi-finalist from Mpumalanga, and with MPact Recycling being one of the main sponsors of the competition, she needed to participate in at least one recycling project.

She told the pupils more about the importance of recycling, and they picked up waste in the area days before her visit to bring to school on the day.

Green and his team weighed and valued all the waste and would remove the two big containers filled by the pupils at a later stage.

The money earned by them this way would then be handed to the school.

He estimated that around R5 000 worth of waste was collected at the event.

Taylor said projects like this were a very fulfilling part of her duties as a semi-finalist. “It does not only keep our country clean, but will benefit us all in future.”
